How much a vet costs: consultations, tests and surgery at real prices
"How much is this going to cost" is the question an owner asks in the clinic doorway, at the exact moment when thinking about money is hardest. Which is why it helps to know the numbers in advance.
We pulled together the actual price lists of three Kyiv clinics as of July 2026 – no "from" and no "approximately", just what is written in the lists themselves.
How much a vet consultation costs
A first consultation with a general vet in Kyiv costs between 400 and 950 UAH depending on the clinic. A specialist – dermatologist, neurologist, cardiologist, dentist – runs 550-1200 UAH.
Worth being clear about: the consultation is only the examination and the conversation with the vet. Tests, ultrasound, X-rays and medication are billed separately.

What "just getting them checked" costs
The most common scenario: the animal has been eating listlessly for a few days and the owner goes to the clinic "just in case". The standard set is a consultation, a complete blood count, biochemistry and an abdominal ultrasound.
Using the prices above: 950 + 850 + 1250 + 1100 = 4150 UAH at A-Vet, or 950 + 950 + 1650 + 950 = 4500 UAH at AnimalClinic. And that is before any treatment – just to find out what is going on.
Which is exactly why "going to the vet" gets postponed. And exactly why illness is often found at the point where treating it costs ten times as much.
Planned costs over a year
If the animal is healthy, the annual minimum looks like this:
- Rabies vaccination – 0 UAH at a state veterinary clinic of the State Service for Food Safety, where the vaccine is free
- Combination vaccination at a private clinic – 350-1600 UAH
- Parasite treatments – several times a year, the cost of the products
- Preventive check-up – 400-950 UAH
That comes to roughly 1000-3000 UAH a year for a healthy animal. Predictable money that is easy to budget for.
What you can get free or cheaper
Rabies vaccination. At the state veterinary clinics of the State Service for Food Safety the rabies vaccine is free – permanently, not as a campaign. Around 5 million animals are vaccinated this way each year.
Veterinary and sanitary passport. Issuing the passport at the state service is also free, and it takes one working day after the examination.
Regional clinics. The prices above are for Kyiv. In regional centres and smaller towns the lists are usually 30-50% lower, while the quality of basic procedures – examination, vaccination, parasite treatment – barely depends on the city.
The most expensive things are the ones nobody plans for
Planned costs are predictable. The problem is elsewhere: an injury happens suddenly, and the bill arrives at once.
- a broken leg: X-ray, pain relief, fixation or surgery, follow-up visits
- a cat falling from a height: ultrasound, tests, treatment of internal injuries
- a bite from another animal: wound care, antibiotics, sometimes surgery
Even at the prices above, a routine planned operation – spaying or neutering – is 1500-5500 UAH. Emergency surgery after an injury, with anaesthesia, hospitalisation and medication, comes to more.
Where insurance fits in
Insurance does not make the vet cheaper – it covers precisely the scenario you cannot prepare for. A PetPolis policy covers injuries and accidents with fixed payouts, a sum insured of up to 35,000 UAH and no deductible.
Compare the order of magnitude: a six-month policy starts at 600 UAH, a year at 1200 UAH. A single visit with diagnostics is already 4000 UAH. In other words, a year of insurance costs less than one "just in case" check-up.
All you need to sign up is the pet passport and a microchip – no veterinary examination. There are no restrictions by breed or condition, and injuries caused by military action are covered too.
